Work out pace per 100m or 100y and project race split times.
Swimming pace is the time per 100 meters (or 100 yards), the universal metric for comparing swimming speed. It allows swimmers to set consistent split times across any race distance.
| Event | Distance |
|---|---|
| 50m Sprint | 50m |
| 100m | 100m |
| 200m | 200m |
| 400m / 500y | 400m |
| 800m / 1000y | 800m |
| 1500m / Mile | 1500m |
Formula
Pace per 100m (sec) = (Total Time (sec) ÷ Distance (m)) × 100Total Time = Total swim time in seconds
Distance = Total distance swum in meters
Worked Example
400m in 8:00 (480 seconds)
Did you know? The fastest 100m freestyle swim ever recorded is 46.86 seconds by Pan Zhanle (2024), equating to a pace of 0:47/100m or 7.68 km/h: about 3× faster than a typical recreational swimmer (source: World Aquatics).
