Calculate drops per minute and mL/hr from volume, time and drop factor.
IV drip rate is the number of drops per minute (gtt/min) needed to deliver a prescribed volume of intravenous fluid over a specific time period, calculated using the drop factor of the tubing set.
⚠️ Educational use only. Always verify IV calculations with a licensed healthcare professional before administering fluids.
| Fluid | Volume | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Normal Saline (NS) | 1000 mL | 8 hr |
| D5W | 500 mL | 4 hr |
| Lactated Ringer's | 1000 mL | 6 hr |
| D5 ½ NS | 1000 mL | 10 hr |
| Packed RBCs | 250 mL | 2 hr |
Formula
Drip Rate (gtt/min) = (Volume (mL) × Drop Factor (gtt/mL)) ÷ (Time (hr) × 60)Volume = Total volume of IV fluid to be infused in milliliters
Drop Factor = Number of drops per milliliter determined by IV tubing (10, 15, 20, or 60 gtt/mL)
Time = Total infusion time in hours
Worked Example
1000 mL NS over 8 hours with 20 gtt/mL tubing
Did you know? IV medication errors account for approximately 56% of all medication errors in hospitals. Proper drip rate calculation is one of the most critical nursing competencies (source: Journal of Infusion Nursing).
