Convert between volume and weight for 24 common materials using density. Enter volume or weight of water, flour, sand, concrete, steel, and more to get the other.
Volume-to-weight conversion uses material density (mass per unit volume) to calculate how much a given volume of a substance weighs, or how much space a given weight occupies.
Formula
weight (g) = volume (mL) × density (g/mL)volume = the amount of space the material occupies, measured in mL
density = mass per unit volume of the material (g/mL or kg/L)
weight = the resulting mass of the material in grams
Worked Example
How much does 2 cups of all-purpose flour weigh?
Did you know? The density of water is exactly 1.000 kg/L at 4°C — the temperature at which water reaches maximum density. This is not a coincidence: the kilogram was originally defined in 1795 as the mass of one liter of water at its densest point.
