Calculate area for rooms, flooring, and paint. Includes material estimates and cost calculator.
Square footage is a measurement of area expressed in square feet (sq ft), calculated by multiplying the length and width of a space. It is commonly used in real estate, flooring, and construction.
Formula: Length × Width = Area
| Room Type | Sq Ft | Dimensions |
|---|---|---|
| Small Bedroom | 100 | 10 × 10 ft |
| Average Bedroom | 132 | 11 × 12 ft |
| Master Bedroom | 200 | 14 × 14 ft |
| Living Room | 250 | 16 × 16 ft |
| Single Garage | 200 | 10 × 20 ft |
| Two-Car Garage | 400 | 20 × 20 ft |
| Small Kitchen | 100 | 10 × 10 ft |
| Average Kitchen | 150 | 10 × 15 ft |
Add 10% for waste. For diagonal patterns, add 15%.
120 sq ft + 10% = 132 sq ft needed
1 gallon covers ~350-400 sq ft. Two coats recommended.
120 sq ft ÷ 350 = 0.34 gallons (1 coat)
Add 10-15% for cuts and breakage.
Formula
Rectangle: A = L × W | Circle: A = π × r² | Triangle: A = ½ × B × HL = length (in the same unit as width)
W = width
r = radius of the circle
B = base of the triangle
H = height of the triangle
Worked Example
Living room 16 ft × 16 ft, convert to sq m
Did you know? The U.S. Census Bureau reports the median new single-family home is 2,299 sq ft — nearly double the 1,200 sq ft average from 1970.
