Determine volume, weight, and bags of landscaping material for your project area.
A gravel and mulch calculator determines the volume of landscaping material needed based on the area dimensions and desired depth of coverage.
| Material | Tons/Cu Yd |
|---|---|
| Gravel | 1.4 |
| Pea Gravel | 1.3 |
| Mulch | 0.4 |
| Topsoil | 1.1 |
| Sand | 1.35 |
| Decomposed Granite | 1.5 |
| River Rock | 1.3 |
| Lava Rock | 0.5 |
Formula
Volume (cu yd) = (Length × Width × Depth in inches) ÷ 324L = length of the area in feet
W = width of the area in feet
D = desired depth in inches
324 = conversion factor (12 in/ft × 27 cu ft/cu yd)
Worked Example
20 ft × 10 ft area at 3 inches deep
Did you know? One cubic yard of gravel covers approximately 108 square feet at 3 inches deep — a common depth for driveways and walkways.
