Estimate drywall sheets needed for walls and ceilings with tape and screw counts.
A drywall calculator estimates the number of drywall sheets needed for walls and ceilings, accounting for doors, windows, and sheet size.
| Type | Best Use |
|---|---|
| 1/4″ Regular | Curved walls, overlay |
| 3/8″ Regular | Resurfacing existing walls |
| 1/2″ Regular | Standard walls and ceilings |
| 5/8″ Regular | Walls needing extra rigidity |
| 5/8″ Type X | Fire-rated walls, garages |
| 1/2″ Moisture-Resistant | Bathrooms, kitchens |
Formula
Sheets = (Wall Area + Ceiling Area − Openings) ÷ Sheet Area × 1.10Wall Area = perimeter × wall height in square feet
Ceiling Area = length × width (if included)
Openings = doors (21 sq ft each) + windows (15 sq ft each)
Worked Example
15 × 12 ft room, 8 ft walls, 1 door, 2 windows, ceiling included
Did you know? Over 30 billion square feet of drywall is manufactured in the U.S. each year, making it the most common interior wall finish material (source: Gypsum Association).
