Daily water intake is the recommended volume of water a person should drink each day, based on body weight, activity level, climate, and lifestyle factors.
Coffee, tea, energy drinks
Beer, wine, spirits
Formula
Water (ml) = Weight (kg) × 33 × Activity Factor × Climate FactorBase = 33 ml per kg of body weight per day
Activity Factor = 1.0 (sedentary) to 1.4 (athlete/physical job)
Climate Factor = 0.95 (cold) to 1.3 (very hot, >35°C)
Caffeine/Alcohol = +150 ml per caffeinated drink, +250 ml per alcohol serving
Worked Example
Example: 70 kg, moderately active, warm climate, 2 coffees
Did you know? The popular rule to drink 8 glasses (2 litres) of water per day was first mentioned in a 1945 US Food and Nutrition Board recommendation — with the caveat that most of it comes from food. That caveat has been largely forgotten.
